What makes a literary work “Filipino” in nature? A lot of debates and discussions have been raised regarding the said topic, but shouldn’t the most basic criteria be that the literary work was written by a Filipino itself?

No matter the topic, nor the setting and everything else, once written by a Filipino, it then belongs to Philippine Literature.

I believe in the skill of our countrymen, including myself, in creating great literary pieces. Even the not-so-great should at least be considered in the Filipino genre. After all, everybody has to start off somewhere..=)

The independent movie “Idol: Pag-asa ng Bayan” is a story about a smart yet poor high school student Elly Zabarte who, even at his own efforts is to finish as the top of the graduating class, decides to risk his future for the sake of his friends.

Elly, who works part-time as a student assistant, has come upon the chance to steal a copy of the Physics final exam. After careless circumstances on the part of his friends, the copy of the exam soon reached some of their fellow students, ending in a total surprise for the faculty as a large part of the graduating class got near-perfect scores. Then the real struggle begins.

Although the movie was bare of special cinematic effects, its moral significance more than made up for the commercial loss. At first, the movie seemed really funny, but as the story progressed, I felt like I was a big part of the storyline. Cheating is never new to students, and at least once in a student’s life, one is tempted of doing the deed. It is something that we Filipinos resort to when we want to avoid the consequences of our country’s financial crisis.

The movie also showed how blackmail and bribes have long become a part of the Filipino life. This is shown in the scenes when one of the teachers, Miss Brenda, seizes the opportunity when she finds out about Elly’s role in the cheating scandal. And to get out of trouble, Elly’s best friend pays his debt to him by asking his father to pay Brenda a huge sum of money.

It shows that Filipinos are willing to do wrong just for a few material possessions and wealth, and that no matter how young and good-willed a person may be, the fear of losing everything he worked for because of a small mistake can lead him or her to give in to temptation. This is further proven by the lead character’s following the vague advice of Brenda, stating that if he wills to be valedictorian, there’s a way, of which she meant cheating.

What I found so irritating was the fact that everyone knows the simplest and fairest solution to the dilemma which is a retake of the final exam, yet it took so long for the faculty and staff to figure out what to do.

I believe that the most relevant part of the story was Elly’s valedictorian speech, where I anticipated a confession of his sinful act when he crumpled his copy of the speech and told everyone that he doesn’t really know if he deserves to be at the top. It was when I found that the over-used technique of suspense was really effective. It was really funny when he decided not to tell the truth, but instead say the unforgettable and strong line, “walang dangal sa kahirapan.”

From there he elaborated on his dream of becoming one of the nation’s leaders, of which he delivered a really promising speech. It reminded me of politicians’ campaigns. There, Brenda cried as she realized that she helped develop the sense of corruption in an honest student like Elly. She realized that at the price of a cell phone, a corrupt leader was born.

Then it struck me. The youth is supposed to be the foundation of our nation’s future, and yet the reality that our poor economy drives us to go the easy way to have the good life. And that Elly became the idol, being able to go through his problems with the help of his friends, his loving parents, and dishonesty. But there was also a positive side to the story, the value of friendship, of utang na loob, and of close family ties.
