college 101
The moment I stepped into the Philippines’ Premiere State University: University of the Philippines (UP), I felt the freedom smacking into my face straight on. In fact, I had too much freedom. UP, being an open university practicing democracy, activism and breaking bad rules, has influenced me too much. I broke too many rules, even the good ones.
It’s true that the university is filled with people with bright minds and fresh talent, but one can’t avoid being misled or attracted by the freedom it gives. There’s no one to watch your every move unlike secondary school, and your parents trust you enough as a grown person.
While I skipped classes and disregarded warnings by some of my friends, I slowly learned that I had to break free of freedom itself. Is it possible? I think so.
To be able to have a decent future of my own choice, I had to pass up the opportunity of being a UP student. It is not true what most people say that I made the wrong choice, in fact, I think I made the right thing. =)
